Urgent! Guide Runner Needed PDF Print E-mail
Written by Site Admin

Are there any club members who would  be willing to be a guide runner for a visually impaired paralympic athlete.

Jonathan Bernard is 23 years old and has been competing as a visually impaired athlete since 2005. Jon represented Australia at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games making it to the semi-finals with the 6th fastest 100m time in the Commonwealth. Jon has also competed in Germany, Finland and the Netherlands. In 2008 he represented Australia in Beijing. Paul Pearce was his guide runner. He did a fantastic job.

Jon's sight has deteriorated in the last year and so it is imperative that he find a dedicated guide runner so that he will be able to compete in January in the World Championships in New Zealand and in London 2012.

Jon needs a 400m track athlete to pace him as a guide. This would require a person to train twice a week with Jon and be available for targetted meets and overseas events. This person would need to be able to run 400m around 48-49 seconds. Jon currently runs 52secs but has potential to run 50 or better with a guide. Appropriate renumeration will be offered through his manager.

THOMPSON ESTATE ATHLETICS – May Newsletter

Results

Australian Athletics Championships

The month started with three TEES athletes, Rachel Dodds, Trista Moxham and Yarnell Fischer attending the Australian Athletics Championships held in Perth. These were also Selection Trials for the Commonwealth Games.

They all achieved wonderful results and we are very proud of their efforts. Rachel came first in her AWD 200m race and in doing so set a new world record for her classification!  Trista recorded personal best performances for her events and Yarnell, aged 17 years, was the youngest competitor in the open Men’s Division for 200m. and his performance has placed him as someone to watch out for in the future in Australian Men’s athletics.

Queensland Cross Country Relays

TEES entered six teams in the Cross Country Relays. It was a very successful event for TEES and we have already gained new members because of it. Special thanks to Nathan Swan for running an extra 4km just after his wonderful 2km run, to help the U18 team.

Fundraising

Fundraising continues all year thanks to  Maree Stevens and Robert Cole. The BBQ held at Bunnings was very successful.  Thanks to all who gave up some of their ANZAC Day holiday to help.

Supporter Polo Shirts $20.

These are on display for sizing at the club. Athletes receive a free dress shirt when they have registered.  We also have old tee-shirts that will be sold off as training shirts for $5.00 each.

Training Fees for TEES

$5 per week or $20 a month. $8 per week for a family. It is an honesty system at present, however everyone is strongly encouraged to contribute.  It is cheap at the price and is to help cover the costs of running the club.  Envelopes are just inside the door.

Registration

Anyone who has not paid registration fees, they are now well overdue for the Winter Season which runs from 1 April to 30 September 2010. If you are competing in any Queensland Athletics events,  you need to register with both Queensland Athletics and Thompson Estate. Tui has stated that this also applies to competitors at the Downunder Meet .  This can be done by going to the QA website www.qldathletics.org.au and following the instructions for registering online. If you are returning members your login details should have been emailed to you. If you have problems contact registrar@thompsonestateathletics.com.au.

If you are just training at the club and not competing in QA events you still need to pay the Thompson Estate Fee which covers insurance. This can also be paid for online on the QA website.
